Some of us are ex-Rennies and ALL of us are a wee bit daft but without a doubt, we will kiss your hand if you're a Lady and buy you an ale if you are a Lord (or is that the other way around???).

Let the drooling of anticipation begin. . . we're less than five months from MDRF opening! WOOHOOO.

So let's start getting the FoMDRF house in order!

1) If you don't see your picture and/or answers to the 20 questions on your page listed at: http://www.friendsofmdrf.org/MEMBERS/bios.html

then one of the following has happened:
a) You never sent the photo/answers to me (questions to be answered are at: http://theblackfox.proboards27.com/index.cgi?board=membership&action=display&num=1092831946
b) You sent them repeatedly but to the wrong email - send to: blackfoxofde@gmail.com
c) I lost them both or one or the other

2) If you no longer want to be a member of our group, please email me at: blackfoxofde@gmail.com with the word "unsubscribe" in the subject line. This will automatically pull you from the database.

3) If you know someone who's thinking about becoming a member of FoMDRF.org, please send me their email addy and I'll send out a 'welcome' package of info.

4) Our new Pyrate Ship, The Polly Dodger has tons of open positions for folks with Privateer Guild pins. Even if you don't have one, you can join the crew as a deck hand! email either Chelle or myself for more info, or go to www.pollydodger.com

5) If you want a membership certificate/ID card, please email me and I'll have one ready for you by our Anniversary Party.. . .btw. . .keep Saturday June 25 open, as we have a special 1 year anniversary of FriendsofMDRF.org to be held at the PARF grounds during their Celtic Fling. If we can get 20 or more to RSVP, we can get a private area to hold our celebration! (more info on that to come in May)
6) We have 200 members (including the RESERVED places) at present and we're re-thinking the directorship positions. Lumpy, Sandman, Prax, NoirCyn, Myrddin, Magpie, Chelle, and myself will be meeting soon to discuss this idea. Although these folks make up the core of our Management, the meeting will be open to all members. . . again, more info to come.

7) Expect this kind of group email every month or even few weeks as MDRF2005 grows closer.

As always,

Your Black Fox,
I think I summed up what it feels like to share the Faire with so many friends in my most recent LJ entry, of which the last paragraphs read:
The Maryland Renaissance Festival is much more than 19 days spent in the company of friends who share the same love for "time travel". . . it's what was called in the 1960s a "Happening." It's Woodstock and a church revival rolled into one spiritual essay of love, friendship, and the savoring of delights long left this world.
If I can form the word without crying, it would be HUZZAHHH!
A Seusian poem of MDRF
by The Black Fox
(Steve Kimball)

It's 9:30 and you stand
and you wait and you wait,
you wait at the gate,
for you've learned not to be late.

You know that's early,
almost an hour before,
the opening of Revel Grove,
a village you adore.

For ten months you have waited,
right here in this spot.
You can tell by the looks,
and the smell. . oh, and the cot.

What would drive such a person
to enact such a plan?
"It's MDRF" you reply,
"You just can't understand."

The cast mounts the keep,
the show soon begins.
Here come the Royals,
It's King Henry again.

He stands and gives notice,
He yells out at the crowds.
He commands us to make merry,
The cannon then sounds.

The gates are now open,
sardine-like we shuffle.
Then into the arms of Stupina,
you huggle.

The atmosphere envelopes you,
like a comfortable quilt.
. . . and you just saw a wench,
with her hand up a kilt.

Ahhhh, the ale booths are open
and you've a tankard of meade.
"It's 12 0'clock somewhere,"
You rationalize the need.

You're grabbed by a Pyrate,
a Royale kiss from small Peg.
You blush and you stumble,
"umm. . . I need a Scotch Egg."

She gives you a wink
and waves you away.
RenFolks are incredible,
and your day has been made.

Another great fortune,
you're first in the line.
But you'veemptied your tankard,
you're ready for wine.

With grape in your cup,
the royals you see.
They're meeting and greeting,
but you have to pee.

On to the porta-pots,
what luck you must have.
They're clean and they're spotless,
and don't smell quite too bad.

With a slam of plastic,
the door upon box.
You wash with some Wipey™,
to keep away "pox."

You gather yourself,
and head to the crowd.
Your friend Fred is King Henry,
you share a hug after a bow.

With a smile you leave him,
but you'll see him again soon.
At the Royale Feast's banquet,
an hour and half past noon.

You walk by the shops,
and gaze through the doors.
At the leather, ceramics,
wood, pewter, and swords.

Wood chips cover
the path at the faire
and kicking them up:
a sunlit cloud in the air.

You love this whole place,
and each nook and cranny.
From the goop-filled mudpit,
to the Girls of O'Danny.
(Daisy, Dee-Dee, and Fanny)

From the Chapel of St. George
and its mundane-ridden stocks,
To the agape-mouthed crowds
watching the adams apple of Johnny Fox.

Along comes mime Mimi,
on seven foot stilts.
and look there's more wenches,
with more hands up more kilts.

A small rodent, it hits you,
on the back of your head.
Emrys Fleet gives a laugh,
"Don't worry, she's dead."

By Three of the clock,
you're watching Squire Rosman walk cable.
Then you grab a smoked turkey leg,
a Renaissance Faire staple.

Ahhh Fight School's the thing,
You learn while you laugh.
It's an amazing display,
and an ale you now quaff.

Feeling quite chipper,
but not over the edge.
You take in some theatre,
Shakespeare's Skum from a ledge.

It's a vantage point,
across from the Globe,
Where you can see the whole stage
and the strolling crowds below.

A break was whats needed,
you stare at the folks.
Whether garbed or in street clothes,
there's smiles on most.

At a quarter-till-six,
you must with the haste be make-ed.
It's off to the White Hart,
for Pub Sing and get waste-ed.

"One for the company,
and one for my lass. . ."
You know all the words,
from the first to the last.

You gaze a bit tearilly,
as the lamps are soon lit.
but a large wench's large corset
has just popped out a large. . . uh. . . bit.

As dusk starts to settle,
and your tankard's now dry.
But Pub Sing's not over,
till Amethyst cries.

A hush takes over,
as it get's closer to seven.
As we remember those passed,
like Bill Huttel in heaven.

Our Royal King Henry,
gives his Royal good bye.
Jack Rackham and Pyrates,
soon finish with Ald Lang Syne.

Nymblewyke breathes fire,
and the cannon booms more.
A bag-piped progress,
as we head for the door.

It's a triumphant end,
to a glorious day.
And it's best if it's Maryland,
. . . the Renaissance Way.

For more than a few years now I've been drawing up an idea for a ren documentary. I use digital video equipt. at work for multimedia projects and between Fred (MDRF's King Henry VIII) Nelson and myself, we have enough video editing equipment and experience to start our own production house! I'd ask m'friend for help but he's always booked!

Of course this idea would be more a labour of love than of profit and the the footage therein would be limited to the RenFests that we go to. . namely MDRF, PARF, NYRF (tux), and the Fairy Festival in PA. The majority of the pices, of course, would be of MDRF (home faire).

I'd include NJRF or VARF but they really don't have permanent sites yet.

My overview of the documentary would start with a basic "what is faire" and what folks can expect at the faire (i.e. the mundane public). Interviews would include folks who have come to the faire for the first time and those who frequent but haven't become playtrons. Also included would be some quick information about the time periods covered by most faires (Henry VIII, Elizabeth, Robin Hood, King Arthur). Perhaps a quick history of ren faires in the US would be in order and a shout out to Medieval Times™ (who, who knows might help fund such a documentary).

The next section would be that of the playtron (i.e. ME). . . those of us who pay to get in the gates but once inside, it would be tough to judge whether we worked there or not. . . asking of course the "whys" that all of us get asked on a daily basis.

Next would come of course those that work the faire and would be broken into three parts: 1)Actors & Entertainment 2) Vendors 3)Administrative. The first two are obvious, but the third would, I think, be interesting from a "how the hell do they pull this off" point of view. Things like hazard insurance and keeping things on schedule amaze me at this point as to how it all gets done.

As a wrap-up, there would be a "typical" day at the fair, with a walking tour of MDRF, taking in all the sites and sounds (too bad there's no smell technology yet). Ending with the pub sing at MDRF and the torch-lit parade to the gates, the credits would roll.

Annnnd. . . as this idea has been fleshed out so far, there would be greater detail as to folks who've made a profession out of Renfaires from clothing to cutting CDs of pyrate songs. . . and then the fandom of faires from sites on the web to this very newsgroup.

In short, I want to get it ALL.

What do ye think?
